Bellagio and Villa Carlotta
Catch a ferry from Como to Bellagio, and spend the morning discovering villa gardens and the topsy-turvy beauty of the town itself. We would recommend a visit to a small shop in the city centre, Carmen Como Silk (Salita Serbelloni, 8), of Como’s renowned silk manufacturing industry. We suggest having lunch in Bellagio before taking a ferry across the lake for an afternoon visit to Tremezzo's Villa Carlotta (www.villacarlotta.it).
Varenna
Catch a ferry from Como to Bellagio and hop another ferry to Varenna. Make the walk up to the Castello di Vezio for panoramic views over Varenna. We suggest having lunch at the charming restaurant Il Cavatappi (Via XX Settembre,10) tucked just uphill from the waterfront.
Como and Brunate Funicolar
Take an early funicular up to Brunate to catch views of Como and the lake under the rising sun's rays. Back in Como, explore the old centre, making time for the Duomo and the Basilica di Sant'Abbondio. In the afternoon, we suggest a stop at Gelateria Ceccato (Lungo Lario Trieste,16) : for generations comaschi (Como residents) have turned to Ceccato for their Sunday-afternoon gelato and then embarked on a ritual passeggiata (stroll) with their dripping cones along the lake shore. You can do no better than imitate them with a takeout or, alternatively, order a more flamboyant concoction to enjoy in the alfresco Garden Bar.
